June 2011

A message from Sandy Warren,
Charlotte Family Yoga Instructor of the Month

What you might not know about me.

I WAS a type A...Pink Cadillac driving, single Mom of two and I loved it! Balance was really a juggling act and I was always in search of it.  I came to believe that balance was not accomplished in the framework of a day, but rather a month or maybe a quarter.  Can you see the BIG Superwoman shirt I am wearing?

I MOVED in 1993 to Charlotte from New England, after meandering around the east coast trying to decide where I wanted my next life experience to be.  I wanted one that supported my son, then 15, and my daughter who was a freshman in a private college.  I searched for a healthy lifestyle, nature around me, tennis, dancing, etc. and I found it in Charlotte.  Oh did I mention I had NO friends here , NO relatives, NO customers, and oh yes,  I was in a 100% commission business.  Not surprisingly some friends and family mentioned that I might be out of my mind.

This is where the power of intention and belief play a really BIG role.  Ask me sometime to tell you about my goal poster, and the home and community that we came to call home.  It all made a believer out of my two children and others.

Today, the kids are on their own, and have provided three beautiful grandchildren.  I married again only 3 ½ years ago, it took a special man to clip these wings.  Happy we are in our downsizer bungalow, enjoying a wonderful season in our lives.

Parent Focus Group Comes to Charlotte Family Yoga

  By Julie Merchant

It is not a weakness to feel the stress of parenting, it is a natural occurrence.  A stressed out or worn out parent is a caring parent.  I believe that all parents are doing the very best that they can with the tools that they possess, because every functional parent wants the very best for their child.  In fact, most of us hold a subconscious image of our child that exceeds our own self image, because none of us feel as if we are complete.  This is why we often feel as though we are fumbling our way through this parenting thing.  The recognition that all children are unique individuals, even from us, means that we are constantly trekking through new territory.  With other parents to share and discuss our experiences we are, reaffirmed and empowered.

Many of us are surrounded by family, but this is not always the case and for some, our family is not a healthy support.  Some find support through the church, school or other organizations.  What is important is that you have a social circle and that within that circle, you have someone that you can call on in an emergency, a good listener, an emergency child care provider and most importantly at least one friend with whom you can get out and have some fun!  Nurturing yourself is the only way to ensure that you have enough energy to share and care for your children.

A parenting group is often a very important part of your support system, as it is a community of similar interest, as well as a place to release, renew and learn through sharing with others.  At Charlotte Family Yoga Center we will be starting a Parent Focus Group in June, for this very purpose.  With our love of Yoga, common interests in a healthy lifestyle and undoubtedly similar parenting goals, it is the perfect place to gather and support each other as our families grow together.

Click here for more information on Julie Merchant and the Parent Focus Group.   Charlotte Family Yoga Center's Parent Focus Group will meet at 12:30 pm, the second and fourth Saturday of the month at the center beginning June 11.  All are welcome; the age of your children does not matter.  We will discuss all topics as they relate to the ages of your children.  Please call the center to preregister or simply register when you come.
