Love fills the room when Tony leads your practice. Yes, with those big brown eyes and deep sultry voice this gentle giant easily fills a room to capacity, but one can’t help but leave this instructors class with a heart full of compassion and gratitude. Tony nurtures each client with his passion for yoga and its ability to reveal our interdependence with nature, as he strives to increase his personal understanding of the connections of mind, body and spirit, and the ensuing connections to the universal energies.
Tony loves to guide his students through each practice as it truly is; the first day of the rest of their life. With a deep knowledge of the physical body and the importance of nurturing all aspects of mind body and spirit, Tony has a special affinity for guiding students and colleagues in a deep gentle stretch for the ligaments and joints and he also enjoys teaching flow, or a combination of both. He is passionate about physical fitness and elegantly fuses his massage therapy knowledge with his yoga instruction, to enable his clients a better understanding and application of the asana’s (poses).
Introduced to yoga in 2002, by a friend who invited him to a Bikram class, Tony added a regular practice to his busy lifestyle as a massage therapist and instructor as well as holding a full time day job, citing that it brought balance, while detoxifying his body, as well as increasing focus and clarity. He currently practices Bikram, Vinyasa, Long slow deep and Yin yoga.
Born in Grand Rapids MI, Tony attended Clark University in Atlanta, where he earned his BA in business administration. He served in the military and spent many years in Washington D.C.
In 2009 Tony was certified in Vinyasa under Staphanie Keech, completed further studies in Yin, under Sarah Powers and trained with Johna and Steve Smith and Sally Knight at Yoga One Assist boot camp. Today Tony spends most of his time teaching yoga at The Charlotte Family Yoga Center and practices massage therapy out of his home studio in Charlotte.
Having learned the importance of presence through his years of practice, Tony says ‘I strive to always be mindful of the moment, for this where our power is. Dissatisfaction is linked to our expectations from past experiences.’ He shares this message through his teaching style, along with the importance of finding inner peace – the key to manifestation. The idea of inner peace is contagious, if you spend much time in Tony’s classes.
